How to Choose PPF? TPU vs TPH vs PVC Explained

TPU, TPH, and PVC each have their pros and cons. This guide compares durability, protection, and installation difficulty to help you choose right.

In the car film market, TPU, TPH, and PVC are the three most common base materials. Many car owners feel confused when buying: what exactly are the differences between these three materials? Which one is more suitable? This article will conduct an in-depth comparison from multiple dimensions including material characteristics, service life, and protection capability.

TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) is currently the highest-performing car film base material on the market. Its core advantages include: excellent elasticity and toughness to effectively resist stone impacts; unique self-healing coating that can recover minor scratches when heated; outstanding yellowing resistance, no significant yellowing for 5+ years; and removable adhesive that won't damage the original paint. The downside is relatively higher price and greater installation difficulty, requiring professional technicians.

TPH (Thermoplastic Polyurethane/Polyester Hybrid) is a mid-range material between TPU and PVC. Its advantages include: good softness and relatively easy installation; moderate price with good value; high color saturation and excellent color-change effect. However, durability is not as good as TPU, typically lasting 2-3 years; limited self-healing ability; and slight yellowing may occur with long-term use.

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is the most traditional car film material and the lowest-priced option. Advantages include the widest color selection, low cost, and suitability for short-term color-change experiences. But the disadvantages are obvious: service life of only about 1 year; prone to yellowing and cracking; risk of paint damage when removing; and poor environmental performance.

Buying advice: If you seek long-term protection with sufficient budget, TPU is strongly recommended. If the main purpose is color change with a limited budget, TPH is a good choice. If it's just for short-term experience or event needs, PVC can be considered. Remember: cheap car films often mean higher later maintenance costs — in the long run, TPU is actually more economical.
