Self-Healing Scratches: Is It Real?

Is TPU self-healing a marketing gimmick or real science? This article explains the mechanism from a materials science perspective.

The scratch self-healing function is one of the core selling points of TPU car films, but many consumers are skeptical: is this real technology or just a marketing gimmick? This article will analyze the self-healing principle from a materials science perspective.

Self-healing principle: The top coat of TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) contains special polyurethane molecular chains. At room temperature, these molecular chains are in a relatively fixed state. When the surface is lightly scratched, the molecular chains are disrupted, forming scratches. When the temperature rises (above approximately 60°C), the molecular chains gain enough thermal energy to rearrange and flow, filling the scratch area and restoring the original smooth state.

Triggering conditions: The most common trigger is sunlight — under direct summer sunlight, the car body surface temperature can reach 70-80°C, sufficient to trigger self-healing. You can also rinse the scratched area with hot water (approximately 60-70°C), and you can usually see obvious results within 5-10 minutes.

Repair scope: It's important to note that the self-healing function has its limitations. It can effectively repair: minor scratches (depth not exceeding the top coat), car wash swirl marks, and minor friction marks. But it cannot repair: deep scratches (that have penetrated the TPU base layer), impact dents, or severe scrapes.

Test conclusion: After multiple tests, the self-healing function of TPU car films is real and effective, but the results vary depending on product quality and scratch depth. Choosing quality TPU products from reputable brands yields more significant and lasting self-healing effects.
